The CFFL concluded the their 5th year as the decade closed out. 1989 the Chislers were back on top of the North. Astronomicals looked poised to repeat as they finished the regular season with a 11-2 record. They would fall short however by one game losing to the Martin's Maulers in the semis 25-11.
The Maulers would face Mike's Mooches out of the South as a wild card. The Mooches, another franchise that liked to put in a lineup and forget it, rolled through the playoffs beating the Crickets 30-22 in Round 1 and then blowing out the Spuds 33-6 in the semis. They would then beat the Maulers in Fantasy Bowl V 38-27.
