CFFL History: Fantasy Bowl XXII

First TNF game on NFL Network!

2006 saw the Wrecking Crew win the North 10-4 and poised for a championship run.  They led the league in scoring with the next closest team nearly 200 points behind.  They scored 60 or more points 4 times, including 70 points  in the first round of the playoffs against the Juggernauts.  Crew set the record for most points in the postseason with 155. They were led by Ladainian Tomlinson, who would set the record for most points by a RB with 194.  Both those records stand today.  After crushing the Juggs, they would edge the Ferrets 48-43 in the semis to make it to Fantasy Bowl XXII and entered the game as a big favorite.

The Crush were West Division Champs at 10-4 led by last years MVP Shaun Alexander.  They would beat the Strikers 26-10 in Round 1 and Mayhem 24-11 on their way with a date with the mighty Crew.  They were not afraid of the Crew who came into Fantasy Bowl XXII as a double digit favorite.  The Crush elected to be introduced as a team opposed to each individual player to open the Fantasy Bowl festivities.

The Crush would get 12 points from Steve Smith and a TD run from Shaun Alexander, but the story was yet another record set by the Crew.  RB Steven Jackson would score 4 times in the game!  Yet the Crew still trailed 41-36 late into New Years Eve.  Only player left was their kicker Robbie Gould.  Surely they could get 6 points from him that night.  He had kicked 10 and 14 points in the previous two playoff games.  No problem, right?  Well Robbie Gould would only kick one XP as the time ticked off on the 2006 year and the Crew would lose to the Crush 41-37.  A record setting season all for naught.  The Crush earned their very first Fantasy Bowl trophy in their first appearance.
